Checking mud weight

On the Along Wellbore form (Wellbore Stability > Check Mud Weight > Along Wellbore), you can evaluate the proposed or used mud weight by predicting the degree of wellbore failure along the well trajectory with the given stress state and rock properties and displaying the results. This information will help you to determine safe mud weight windows.

  1. Select the critical BO width and mud weight logs for the mud weight analysis. If the desired log is not available in the drop-down list, you can also create or import logs by using the Create log or Ellipsis buttons.
  2. (Optional step) Check the Use Upper and Lower MW Bounds checkbox to run the check mud weight algorithm to calculate the Lower Bound MW, the Actual MW and the Upper Bound MW, based on the specified mud weight log in the previous step. If you select this option, then you must specify the mud weight bounds definition.
  3. Use the radio buttons to select a mud weight bounds definition:

    • Entire wellbore - Select to calculate the bounds for the entire wellbore
    • Per casing - Select to calculate the bounds per casing section. Select a section from the drop-down list.
  4. Click (Re) Calculate to run the algorithm.
  5. Click Show to open the Check Mud Weight View.
  6. By default, this view displays the mud weight log specified in Step 1, breakout data, the lithology track, and the wellbore schematic. To add additional tracks or change the view parameters, use the Show View Options form.
  7. BO rendering data source - When you have selected to calculate Lower, Actual and Upper MW bounds, these logs are calculated based on the selected mud weight log in the first step on the form. The new created logs are stored in the JewelExplorer under All Logs in the Pressure folder and have the following names: 'Lower MW Bound, calculated <name of the case>', 'Upper MW Bound, calculated <name of the case>'. Select one of the options: Lower Bound MW, Actual MW or Upper Bound MW to use for displaying Breakouts in the Well View. You can switch between these options. The Show button will change into a Refresh button. Click it to update the Well View.
  8. Next, go to the Depth Based form, where you can display depth-based plots of the breakouts (Wellbore Stability > Check Mud Weight > Depth Based CMW).
